About the Newsletter – CSEAS Newsletter

About the Newsletter

The CSEAS Newsletter features a variety of articles and columns by faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scholars affiliated with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Kyoto University. The publication style was renewed in May 2023, aiming to present activities more closely to our audiences through a monthly English-Japanese bilingual web medium. Currently, there are four primary columns: interviews, a research introduction column, “Notes from the Field,” covering reports on research gatherings, and a book introduction column, “Letter from the Kamogawa River.” We introduce our interests and research outline and describe what we do at home and in the office before and after going to the field. We hope to provide a forum to young student readers so that they can learn about the interesting aspects of our research. For more information on the daily activities of CSEAS, please also check out our monthly digital news. Some of our diverse research meetings and activities are selected from them and explored in the columns of the Newsletter.

We also provide back issues of the Newsletter, published separately in English and Japanese once a year since 2017, and access to earlier issues. They provide a history of CSEAS’s two predecessors, the former Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and the Center for Integrated Area Studies (CIAS), as well as the pioneering spirit of those times to open up new research fields and the expansion of research activities after the merger of our two organizations, which continue to this day.

We hope you enjoy the CSEAS Newsletter.
